Bookshelf made of rubber-coated magnet sheet. You can put books in the space created by drapes by sticking it on the steel wall. The rubber coating on the surface of the sheet holds the book well. For example, it can be attached to a steel temporary enclosure at a construction site, which is often seen in Tokyo, to create a temporary knowledge sharing place in the city.

 

Most furniture, not just bookshelves, is passive and is meant to accommodate people or something. The internal space is determined by the standard of the human body and the size of what can be put in it. What would the furniture look like if it were an active entity with a unique identity?

 

PROCESS

In considering a new bookshelf, I observed the relationship between the shelves and books. That relationship makes the book even more ponderous.

From that observation, I once removed the stereotype of bookshelves and explored the possibility of books and the spatial structure that supports them.Then I arrived at the idea to use magnet sheets because I thought most flexible-construction will be possible by utilizing spaces of drapes or winkles. I tried several different thickness magnet sheets and adopted a 0.6mm sheet from the viewpoint of ease of shape change, strength of magnetic force, and strength of drape as shelf.
